Seen from space, our earth is a shimmering sphere of rare and fragile beauty. From this cosmic perspective, we realize that in addition to being proud citizens of our country, we must also be people of the earth and deepen our reverence and respect for all life and for our jewel of a home.
The time has come for a New World Flag that transcends boundaries and stands for all that is best in us; our ability to wage peace, ensure social and economic justice for all, foster racial harmony, end world hunger, and create environmental sustainability.
There's no doubt about it. Many of us fell asleep for awhile. Frenetic consumerism, techno-lust, and the constant, flickering images of TV, computer, and video, lulled us into a state of complacency that bordered on apathy.
But early events of the new millenium have changed everything. While some have chosen to react by living in more fear and contraction, many others are experiencing the opposite. Many of us are feeling a restlessness, an opening, a yearning for community, a passion for truth and justice … a desire to live deeper, more authentic and purposeful lives. We find we can no longer ignore people who are oppressed and denied basic human rights; hungry children, victims of hate crimes, exploited workers, battered women, abused children… all who have had their spirits broken by injustice, greed and hatred.
For growing numbers, going shopping, staring passively at a screen for hours, and pretending that what happens to people on the other side of the world has no impact on us, just isn't working anymore. They are aware that something shifted in them and in our world on 9/11. People are waking up to the fact that we individually have the power to contribute to the betterment of this world and that it begins with making peace with ourselves.
